What is the time commitment?
The majority of volunteer roles at Dakin require a 6 month commitment. Most opportunities require one shift per week. Volunteer shifts are typically 2-3 hours long. By committing to a regular schedule, you help us provide reliable care for the animals who depend on us.
Dakin does occasionally recruit for seasonal roles where the time commitment varies, so please review each job description carefully before submitting your application to determine whether the role fits your availability.
Can I just drop in and play with the animals?
Enrichment and socialization is very important, but typically part of a larger role during our volunteers’ shifts.
A shelter environment can be overwhelming for animals, filled with new experiences and unfamiliar surroundings. They have left behind everything they know and now face unknown smells, sounds, people, and other animals. By providing a routine, we can help bring some predictability back into their lives. Just like us, animals benefit from a schedule. Just imagine how tiring it would be to have unexpected visitors at all hours. A regular schedule allows us to offer enrichment opportunities for the animals in a way that avoids overstimulation and helps them adjust more comfortably.
Do you have any one-time volunteer opportunities?
Unable to commit to a specific schedule? You can still help! If you are looking to support Dakin but can't make a long-term commitment, consider a short term service opportunity listed below:
- Create your own DIY fundraiser or host a supply drive to benefit pets and people through Dakin's programs.
- Craft supplies for the animals! One simple project that can benefit and comfort animals at Dakin are No-Sew-Fleece Blankets! Take a look at our quick template to get started.
- Volunteer for one of our signature events, like the Will Run for Cookies 5K or Barks & Brews! View Dakin events here and reach out to Katilyn Holloway, Community Engagement Manager, at kholloway@dakinhumane.org if you are interested in learning more about event day volunteering.

Can I complete community service hours at Dakin?
We do not offer program hours for those looking to fulfill community service hours for pending or completed court cases. If you are looking to fulfill community service hours for school or an organization, please follow our regular volunteer process and ensure you have the ability to complete the full time commitment listed in the job description.
Is there a minimum age requirement?
