Fostering with Dakin

Foster caregivers play a vital role in helping animals find homes by providing a temporary break from the shelter. Some animals simply need a quiet place to decompress, while others benefit from basic training, socialization, or the guidance of experienced dog or cat-savvy fosters. Kittens often require extra support, including basic medical care, as they grow.
Many of our animals can be adopted directly from their foster homes, making fostering an even more impactful way to help while also freeing up shelter space for other animals in need. Whether for a week or a few months, opening your home to a foster pet is a rewarding way to make a difference.
All the supplies that you need to provide foster care for Dakin animals will be provided.

Fostering: What to Expect
-
All medical care is provided by Dakin. We also provide food, litter, toys, and other supplies as needed.
-
You provide daily care to meet each animal’s individual needs. This may include socialization, giving medications, and monitoring health or behavior
-
Communication is essential. You’ll stay in touch with our team via email and online forms to provide updates on medical needs, behavior changes, and adoption-ready photos and videos.
-
Foster timelines are flexible. Animals may need care for as little as one week or up to a few months. You can choose which animals fit your schedule.
-
Trips to Springfield are part of the process. Foster animals must come in for scheduled appointments such as vaccines, medical rechecks, and adoption appointments. Kittens often require more frequent visits and must be brought in within 24 hours if recommended by our medical team.
-
We welcome a wide range of households and experience levels. Whether you’re new to fostering or have prior experience, we’ll work with you to find the best first for your lifestyle and comfort level.
-
Training and support are provided. We provide in person training, an online foster resource library and pair new fosters with experienced mentors.
-
Foster cats and kittens need their own room. This space should be easy to clean, have a door that fully closes, and be completely separate from resident pets. A spare bathroom often works well for kittens.
- Fostering with Resident Pets: Most caregivers have their own pets. While fostering is generally safe, your pets may experience stress or, rarely, exposure to illness. Keeping them up-to-date on vaccines and providing a separate space for fosters helps minimize risk.
