Vito's Foster Journey

Dakin’s dedicated foster caregiver, Cathy Roy, recently said goodbye to Vito, a one-year-old tabby cat who found a loving adopter. Cathy shared Vito’s journey, from surviving harsh winter days as a stray, to his arrival at Dakin, and his time spent with her. After fostering him for several weeks, Cathy (who has fostered over 100 cats/kittens for Dakin) beautifully captured his story, and we'd love to share it with you.

“Hello everyone - my foster mom has been giving you a lot of information about me. I thought it was time for you to hear it from the 'cat’s mouth!’

I was very confused for a while. I had a home, then I didn't. The streets were pretty scary. I acted tough, but it was a facade, I was terrified. Some nice people started feeding me, I was soooo glad! Food is hard to come by in the winter. I wouldn't let them pet me or come near me. You wouldn't believe what they did next...they tricked me into going into a carrier!!! They put some treats in there and then shut the door on me when I went in. I wasn't too happy.

Next thing I know I'm at Dakin. I didn't know what it was, I only knew that there were lots of other animals and I was definitely not happy about my situation.

They were nice enough to put me in a room where a really sweet lady worked. I got my privacy. It wasn't ideal, but things were improving. If that wasn't enough at this point, I ended up in a dang carrier again and was told I was going home with my foster mom. I WAS NOT HAPPY! I was in unfamiliar territory, again and I didn't know this person, either.

Well, she was really patient. I let her know a couple of times how upset I was at everything, but she didn't give up. She talked to me and would just sit with me. I started to trust her. I let her pet me, pick me up and even kiss me! I was loving this life!

I have windows to look out of, I have beds to sleep in and lots of food and toys! There are even resident cats that come visit me at the door (there's a gate there that I want down) and talk to me. I would really like to stay here. My foster mom wants me too, but told me that there's a wonderful home out there waiting for me.

I'm nervous about that. It took me a little while to get used to this home and to trust her. I really hope there is someone else that is patient and will let me adjust at my own pace. I love company and pets, and will be a great companion, but I don't want to be rushed. I've been through a lot and just need some time to get used to another change.

Sorry for how long this is, but I wanted you to know my story. My bravado has been a shield for me to get by. I'm really just a love bug.”

Vito’s adopter was kind enough to contact Cathy and send photos of Vito in his new home, living his best life. Cathy posted the update: “He’s doing incredible. He’s eating / drinking / pooping / peeing / playing / purring / cuddling as if he’s known this home his entire life." She added, “My heart is sooooo happy to see him happy.”

By fostering animals like Vito, you give them the invaluable opportunity to thrive and relax in a home setting. This allows you to really get to know them, and see their true personality emerge, away from the hustle and bustle of the shelter environment.
