Taming Tiny Lions: Adoption Updates

Dakin’s Lion Tamers volunteer program, which began this past June, socializes feral, scared and under-socialized kittens who have had no interactions with people, and fear them. They’re typically 7-9 weeks old, and in 2024 Dakin admitted 174 little lions -or "Tiny Spirit Kittens" as we sometimes call them.

With careful, methodical steps, the Lion Tamers interact with the kittens. They take their cues from the kittens regarding the pace of interactions. If a kitten seems calm, or even approaches the front of the cage, eager to interact, those are positive signs. If a kitten retreats to the back of the cage, hisses, or turns away from the Lion Tamer, showing no desire to interact, more time and attention is focused on building their trust. The Lion Tamers take detailed notes about each of the kittens for their fellow Tamers who will encounter them next.

In 2024 the Lion Tamers program was open June through December, and volunteers filled 300 taming sessions to help tiny kittens take giant steps toward much brighter futures.

Sparrow, now Zari, happy in home where she was described by her adopter as "a beautiful, sweet, and smart kitty!"

Twilight and Star (formerly Twinkle and Starlight)

“They are the best little babies, and I love them endlessly. We snuggle every night and I am very lucky to have them. They're very well behaved and very lovable. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to keep the brothers together and adopt two feral babies at once. They are best friends and it makes me very happy that they get to spend their lives together!"

Snickers (formerly Snickerdoodle)

“Love our spirit kitty. Perfect for us. Patience is a must. Still is, may always be. And that’s okay with us. She’s loving. She loves to play! She seems to have heightened hunter instincts. She found ‘hiding places’ in each room, these are her go to spots when she enters a room. Most times she comes out now when we walk in. To play or to be petted. She enjoys cuddling and being held on her schedule, lol. She’s a joy!"

Scout

“Two days after we adopted him we learned what he loved. He Love cuddles, tummy rubs, toys, watching tv, and enjoys giving nose kisses"

Diesel (formerly Jes)

“The first time we went in to see the spirit cats, he hissed at us, a week later I can back and he was super friendly. I truly believe your work helped him get to that point. And from there we had a very smooth experience socializing him further. He is now a super cuddle bug. He has chosen his one person but he’s still friendly with others. He enjoys birdwatching, playing, playing with his sister, and staying warm! And causing the right amount of mischief!"
