Summer of Love Adoption Events Sends 94 Pets into New Homes

A joyful adoption
Thanks to a very successful adoption event held last week, 94 Dakin pets found their way to new homes and happy families last Friday and Saturday, July 11-12. During those two days, adoption fees for cats/kittens and dogs/puppies were reduced by $100, and waived for other species of pets available for adoption.
The Summer of Love Adoption Event was supported with grant funding from the ASPCA as part of its National Shelter Initiative to help shelters struggling with ongoing capacity challenges, long-term staffing and veterinary care shortages, and an increasing number of animals requiring specialized care.

A family adopts
There was already a line of adopters waiting when doors opened on the first day of the event. Within seconds, Dakin’s lobby was bustling with people excited to meet available pets. Staff members and volunteers efficiently guided them in the direction of the pets they sought, and worked seamlessly together to make the resulting adoptions as efficient as possible. Saturday also brought many adopters, and by the time the event was over, the team had tallied up 50 adoptions in total for that day, adding to the 44 from the day before.
From all of us (especially the happy but exhausted team who worked hard on this event), we thank everyone who brought a new pet home. Summer is the busiest season for animal shelters, and it’s always imperative to have as much available space for pets in need. As the saying goes, when you bring a shelter pet home, you’re saving two lives; the one you adopt, and the one you make space for in the shelter.
