New Beginnings for Dakin Adoptees

Before we say goodbye to 2024, we wanted to share some terrific adoption updates that we’ve received over the past year. If you have adopted a Dakin pet and want to share a photo or two and an update about life with your new bestie, please email us at updates@dakinhumane. Thanks to all who shared their updates here!

Reggie, Cashew (cats) and Tony (dog)

(Reggie, left, showing he has hand, and in the foreground at right, along with Cashew and Tony)

“Hi all! Wanted to give an update on our boys! Reggie (dark tabby cat) was adopted from Dakin in 2019, he was a force to be reckoned with and we always assumed he would be a lone cat. His “angry” demeanor was exactly what I was looking for, and he tends to immediately dislike anybody that isn’t his human father, which I appreciate greatly; some of us prefer the classic mean cat stereotype. But Reggie is an incredible cuddler if he likes you! (Spoiler alert: he doesn’t like you) Flash forward to 2024, we have Reggie and our rescue dog Tony! They’re an inseparable pair of fraternal twins, but we knew we had more room in our hearts and hope that Reggie could accept a feline sibling, so we picked up Cashew (orange cat) from Dakin in April! Cashew is the complete opposite of Reggie, sweet as can be and incredibly social, but is very understanding of other animals’ boundaries which made for a great transition for Reggie. They socialized through a screened off doorway for only a month before they both broke through the screen to meet each other! Cashew taught Reggie how to play and it’s so fun to hear the pitter patter of their little feet chasing each other from one room to the next. We especially love finding them in a little cuddle huddle which we never thought would be possible for Reggie and another cat! We always assumed we’d be a one-cat family, but we couldn’t be more thankful for Cashew and for Dakin for helping expand our beautiful family, we love our 3 boys to the moon and back! Thank you, Dakin!” - Lauren

Kanye Nest (parakeet)

(Kanye and Cuddle Buddy)

“Thanks to all the volunteers who helped me adopt Kanye Nest today. I thought you’d get a laugh out of him sitting next to his cuddle Buddy in his new cage. I felt sorry for him all alone in quarantine so gave him a stuffed friend.”  - Martha

Charlie (dog)

(Charlie at his favorite window)

"I adopted Charlie in May of 2023. At the shelter he was very nervous. He’d only been surrendered the day before. The staff member was very flexible and let me take him outside to the front of the building, and he and I just sat on the front sidewalk. It started with Charlie sitting as far away as the leash would allow, to him sitting between my legs and even looking at me some.

His disposition changed even further once he realized he was leaving with me. His gait changed, his ears perked up, and his expression was less worried as he followed me to my car. With the windows down he took his "gotcha" ride and became even more upbeat.

This little guy has taught me a lot in the almost year since we adopted him. Of all the animals I have taken in or adopted, he had the longest transition period upon coming home. He had been with his previous family his whole life and was bit shell-shocked. He slowly let little pieces of his personality come through. Slowly playing with toys, or burrowing into piles of blankets or laundry when an opportunity presented itself. He was affectionate, but very much on his terms.

Upon getting comfortable and deciding he was safe, he became very playful, vocal, and affectionate. He has a plethora of toys he regularly plays with. He likes to be chased and to chase you back. He loves dried chicken treats, whimsies, and getting his monthly Bark Box. His favorite spot in the house is our sofa table looking out our front window. He has different barks for different things; to go out, to be played with, to go for car rides, and when he wants his water refilled.

He is also quite possibly the laziest dog I have ever met! Some days he stays in bed after we get up, and loves my electric blanket. He is smart, sometimes so weird and silly, sassy, and cute." – Kate

Butters & Kyle (guinea pigs)

(Butters & Kyle celebrated Thanksgiving in style)

“Thank you again for letting us adopt these 2 cutie pies! We adopted them in July 2023 and they are amazing! We love them so much and they are living the best life ever, they love camping, being cuddled, and of course...lots of food/hay & snacks. Thank you again for all you do to help these precious animals. We are forever grateful!  Happy Holidays!” - Sandi & Louie

Bubbles McTroubles (dog)

(Bubbles awaits some pampering)

“This is a photo of Bubbles, otherwise known as Bubbles McTroubles. She is a sweet and very smart beagle mix that we rescued from Dakin when she was about 12 weeks old. She will soon enter her 14th year and although her eyes aren't as sharp and her hearing isn't so keen, she is still going strong! Her favorite hobbies include eating, using her beagle nose on walks, eating, whining for food, pretending she needs to go outside and then guiding us to the treat cabinet, and eating! My husband is home most days and his life basically revolves around our adorable old girl so she is quite a little queen and used to getting waited on paw and paw. And we wouldn't have it any other way. She has brought us so much joy and laughter over the years, and we feel utterly blessed to have had the privilege of taking care of her all of these years. Thank you for what you do, Dakin!” – Sonia
