Moms Fixed Free: Supporting and Preventing Unplanned Litters
Inside a little tote in the backseat of a car is a bundle of wiggly, curious puppies. One by one, they're gently lifted out and passed into waiting hands. This was the scene outside Dakin recently when a family arrived with a mom dog and her litter. The puppies were on their way to Dakin for adoption through a program called Moms Fixed Free.
Launched in 2013, Moms Fixed Free helps families during one of the most overwhelming and financially stressful situations: an unplanned litter of puppies or kittens.
Dakin's Moms Fixed Free program provides spay surgery and essential vaccinations, including rabies and distemper, for moms once their kittens or puppies reach eight weeks old. This service is offered at no cost, helping to alleviate the financial burden for families. Then, after receiving care, the kittens or puppies are prepared for adoption at Dakin. They receive vaccinations as well and are spayed/neutered before finding loving adoptive homes.

As the puppies were being carried inside, Dakin's Veterinary Services Manager, Mary Jane shared, "They're having surgery today and (fingers crossed) will be in new homes by the weekend! I love this program because it’s a true partnership with families in our community - it keeps mom in her loving home and gives the little ones a great start."
It's that spirit of care and collaboration that is at the heart of Moms Fixed Free. And, at the center of it all, are families who love their animal companions. These families experience the relief of knowing they won't face another unexpected litter and that the puppies (or kittens) will be safe, cared for, and heading for adoptive homes of their own. The largest relief of all, is that their beloved companion will be back home curled up with them where she belongs.
