Little Enzo's Big Comeback

At just three months old, Enzo’s life took an unexpected turn. After tumbling down a set of stairs at home, the tiny Maltese puppy began limping. Worried about their little companion, his family rushed him to a pet emergency hospital. During his exam, the veterinarian discovered a serious injury in Enzo’s left hind leg. X-rays confirmed the outcome: the fragile pup had suffered a broken leg. Because the fracture involved the growth plate—an area of cartilage essential to a puppy’s developing bones—surgery was urgently needed.
When Enzo’s family received the estimated cost of the procedure, they were faced with an incredibly difficult decision. Wanting the very best for the puppy they loved, they made the heartbreaking but selfless choice to relinquish him to Dakin so he could receive the care he needed and eventually find a family able to support any possible additional medical needs.
When Enzo arrived at Dakin, staff members welcomed his family with compassion and understanding during such an emotional moment. Our veterinary team carefully evaluated the little pup and determined that the best path for a pain-free, healthy future would be to amputate his injured leg. Despite the discomfort he had been experiencing, Enzo’s sweet and playful nature quickly shone through. With his soulful brown eyes and silky white coat, the tiny dog charmed everyone he met.
Enzo was given pain medication and spent his first night in the foster care of Dakin Veterinary Technician Lizz Marzan, who made sure he was closely monitored and comfortable.
“I seem to have earned a small reputation as the go-to person when an animal needs emergency foster care after our hours of operation, and I welcome that responsibility,” Lizz shared.
“Emergencies don’t stop when our doors close for the day. When I was asked if I could keep Enzo comfortable overnight until his foster family was available the next morning, I didn’t hesitate.”
According to Lizz, Enzo was a delightful houseguest—except when it came to bedtime. The little pup made it clear that sleeping alone in a crate was not part of his plan.
“I built a cozy ‘wall’ of pillows and brought him into bed with me,” she said with a smile. “At three in the morning he decided it was playtime. We played, we cuddled, and eventually we both settled in for the night.”
Enzo’s surgery went smoothly, and when he woke up, his bright and affectionate personality was still very much intact. With the resilience that puppies seem to possess in abundance, he quickly learned how to navigate the world on three legs. Part of Enzo’s surgical cost was covered by KodiakCare, a nonprofit organization that saves the lives of dogs by providing funding for critical veterinary care.
Enzo’s foster family welcomed him into their home during recovery, providing a calm place to heal, keeping his activity limited, and surrounding him with love. Before long, they realized that their home simply wouldn’t feel complete without him—and they decided to make Enzo a permanent member of their family.
Today, Enzo still approaches life with joyful enthusiasm, even if he moves a little differently than other dogs. His spirit, resilience, and ability to embrace life’s changes remind us all how powerful love and second chances can be.
