Adoptee Bluey awaits breakfast at home

We love getting updates from adopters who welcome a Dakin pet into their families, and here are some we received recently. If you have brought home a Dakin pet and want to share a photo or two and an update about life with your new bestie, please email us at updates@dakinhumane.org. Thanks to all who shared their updates here!

Miley & Monaco

“I initially adopted Monaco, a four-year-old male domestic longhair tabby. He is beautiful and friendly, but he seemed as if searching for his housemates so I decided to return 2 days later to adopt one of his housemates but they were already adopted so I chose a one-year-old female black domestic shorthair named Miley, and she has been the perfect addition. He is very patient with her, even when she jumps in his face and hogs the toys. They complement each other perfectly.” - Marcia

Tigger

“I was told Tigger would be shy and it might take a few days for him to warm up. You were wrong. lol” - Stacey

Lucy & Lia

“Lucy (white dumbo) and Lia (black and white dumbo) have been a wonderful addition to the family and have spent the last year being spoiled and developing wonderful personalities. We also adopted 2 little babies named Ziti (light grey dumbo) and tortellini (dark grey with lightning bolt over eye) to keep them company.  They live separately but next to each other for now with daily play dates and soon we will combine their living areas.” – Christina

Pooka the Kitten (with his friend Sadie)

“In July, I went to the adoption center to look for a kitten who might be a good companion to my golden retriever. We had lost an 18-year-old kitty last fall and were feeling empty without a cat in the house.  I asked about a tabby that was in The Lion’s Den.  I had no idea what that was, but was walked down to see the “Spirit Kitten” who was definitely shy and not interested in humans quite yet.  I was not ready for that, but an orange and white kitten to my right was reaching up through the bars of the kennel as if to say, “look at me!”  And I did, and that was that.  I adopted Walter that day, and already had a room set up.  He was renamed Pooka after a mythical Celtic creature who is very mischievous and Pooka is true to his name.  He spent about a week in his room getting acquainted with sounds, toys, smells, people, and his new dog.  After the first week, Pooka started to venture out to other bedrooms upstairs, always touching base with his safe zone from time to time.  Sometime into week two, he decided to find out where we were at night and came downstairs.  He explored, played, and would come sit on my lap while I watched tv.  Pooka loves to be petted but only on his terms.  We respect that and are letting him set or open up the boundaries.  He LOVES the dog and follows her everywhere.  Sadie has helped Pooka figure out things here and it has been an amazing thing to witness. I can’t thank Dakin enough for taking in this feral kitten and helping him adjust to life in a world with humans.  He is just the best new member of our family and we are so happy to have him!” - Susan

Riley

“I got Riley from Dakin in 2017 and she is now almost 11. When I used to volunteer and walk dogs, I told myself I wouldn’t bring a baby home. Here we are almost 10 years later. She now has two other fur siblings and a 4-year-old human. I am forever grateful for you all! We now live in Texas and my sweet pittie girl loves the warm weather.” - Meghan

Bluey

“Bluey has adjusted very well and has taken over. He likes to have a bite of egg and cheese when I cook that for breakfast.  He lays next to me on the couch when I watch tv and work on my crafts.  My veterinarian gave him a check-up; his cauliflower ear looked good and he gained 2 lbs.  I love him!” - Bluey’s chef

Simba

“We adopted Simba in 2023. He is such a lovebug. He has another dog friend and 6 cat friends.” – Carla

Oreo (Barn Cat)

“I just wanted to check in and give you an update on Oreo. He is not the feral barn cat who doesn’t like people like we expected, but he fits in around here just fine! He is super friendly and funny, and he helps us with all of the projects in the garden. While he let him inside, he seems to prefer being outside. He is a worker and always leaving us thoughtful ‘gifts.’ Here he is relaxing under his favorite shade tree after a long day of working on flower beds and mole hunting.” - Whitney
