Helping Pets Through the Power of Community

One of many happy recent adoptions.
Summer is Dakin's busiest season, and this year has brought a surge of animals arriving in need of care, compassion, and new homes.
When more pets arrive than leave through adoption, some spend longer waiting for the families they deserve. So far this summer, Dakin has hosted several special reduced-fee adoption events that make it easier for more people to welcome a pet into their lives. That's when our community shines by coming forward to bring home a special new friend.
These events take a great deal of quick planning, and rely on dedicated staff and volunteers who help match families with their perfect companions, manage large crowds, and strive to make every adoption a positive experience. Every effort is rewarded when we see a pet leave our shelter with the people they've been waiting for.
We have already held three significant events during which adoption fees were cut in half:
-
June 12–13: Reduced adoption fees for cats and kittens led to 56 feline adoptions, including every available kitten, six Tiny Spirit Kittens, and four medically complex adult cats
-
June 26–27: A dog and puppy adoption event resulted in 22 dogs finding loving homes
-
July 7–11: During a five-day cat adoption event, 98 cats and kittens were adopted into caring families
Finding homes is only part of the solution. Preventing unwanted litters is just as important.
Since opening in 2009, Dakin's Community Spay/Neuter Clinic has performed more than 144,000 spay/neuter surgeries, helping reduce animal overpopulation throughout our region.
On Friday, May 29, the Spay/Neuter Clinic conducted The Big Fix, during which 58 felines (38 females and 20 males) residing in three Springfield zip codes (01105, 01108, 01109) received spay/neuter surgery for the discounted fee of $25. The neighborhoods were selected because they produce some of the highest numbers of animals surrendered to Dakin, making this a proactive investment in keeping future litters out of shelters.
The success of The Big Fix – an ongoing proactive outreach initiative – was truly a community effort. Local organizations, food pantries, housing authorities, community centers, and other partners helped spread the word with bilingual materials provided by Dakin, ensuring families knew affordable services were available. Their collaborative efforts were invaluable.
As summer continues, we're grateful for every adopter, volunteer, donor, partner, and supporter who makes this work possible. Every pet adopted, every surgery performed, and every helping hand moves us closer to a future where fewer animals need shelter and more families experience the joy of unconditional love.
