From Dakin to a Happy Life in Boston: Bane's Journey

When a big, goofy pit bull named Bane arrived at Dakin Humane Society in July 2025, his cheerful personality immediately won over everyone he met. Despite the pain he was living with, Bane greeted staff with a full body wiggle, wide smile, and an eagerness to be loved.

“He was the nicest marshmallow of a boy,” remembers Lauren, Dakin’s Behavior Coordinator. “Even though he had every reason to be uncomfortable, he just wanted affection and attention. If you stopped petting him during his evaluation, he’d climb right into your lap or a volunteer’s lap until someone gave in.”

But it didn’t take long for our medical team to discover the cause of Bane’s discomfort. He had an old hip and pelvic injury that caused arthritis and muscle loss which left him in daily pain. On top of that, he was struggling with skin allergies that required specialized care.

Dakin has seen an increase in the frequency of young, healthy pets with complex medical needs like Bane’s. Thankfully, because of community support, Bane was able to receive the care he needed, which included pain management, a detailed treatment plan, and corrective hip surgery this past fall.

Even as he healed, Bane’s joyful personality never wavered. He became a favorite among staff and volunteers, charming everyone with his goofy grin and endearing attempts to be a “lap dog” despite his size. He even had a doggie girlfriend named Bella, with whom he shared playtime. “They’d have little playdates every day,” Lauren recalls. “He’d let her chew on his ears and legs, and they’d both look up at us like, ‘What?’ It was a bright spot during our busiest season.”

When it came time to find Bane a home, our team knew it would take someone very special, someone willing to continue his medical care and provide a lifetime of love. That someone was Gabi, a compassionate adopter from Boston whose thoughtful questions and preparedness impressed everyone. Because of Bane’s ongoing medical needs, Dakin followed up with Gabi’s veterinary clinic. The receptionists immediately recognized her name and began singing her praises as a pet parent. “We just knew she was the right fit,” says Lauren.

Soon after their first meeting, Gabi officially adopted Bane, now named Merlin. She made plans for his post-surgery recovery, including hiring a trainer to help him navigate the elevator in her apartment building after surgery. “Merlin is such a special guy,” Gabi says. “I’m incredibly grateful to Dakin and Dr. Thomson for saving him and making this surgery happen. I’m going to do whatever it takes to make sure he heals successfully.”

Merlin’s surgery, performed by longtime friend of Dakin and local veterinarian David Thomson, DVM (formerly of Riverbend Veterinary Clinic), was a complete success. And not long after, Dakin staff received the best kind of update: photos of Merlin recovering comfortably in his new Boston home, meeting neighbors, and charming everyone he met.

Today, Merlin is living his best life exploring city streets, lounging on cozy beds, and turning heads in his bright yellow ducky raincoat. His story has come full circle from a dog in pain with an uncertain future to a healthy, beloved family member living his best life.
