Driven by Compassion: Dakin's New Van

Last year, something wonderful rolled into our lives—thanks to the kindness of an anonymous supporter who contributed a lead gift, Dakin purchased a new (to us) van. This vehicle has quickly become an essential part of our daily work, helping us reach animals who need a second chance.

Our van plays a vital role in Dakin’s animal transport program. It allows us to meet pets arriving at Bradley International Airport from partner shelters, assist with local pick-ups and drop-offs, and travel to meet transport partners on their journey north. Every mile driven means another animal safely on their way to care, comfort, and a new beginning.

When the van first arrived, it was plain white—but we dreamed of something more. We wanted to give it a design that was joyful, eye-catching, and unmistakably Dakin. Most importantly, we wanted it to celebrate the people and pets who make our mission possible every day.

We imagined a van wrapped not only in vibrant design, but in love—featuring the names of those who inspire compassion in our community: beloved pets, cherished family members, devoted animal lovers, and friends who share our commitment to helping animals in need.

Last fall, we invited our community to be part of that vision through a special fundraiser to wrap the van, which was greatly enhanced by volunteer Diana Fordham’s kindhearted matching gift. Many of you responded with incredible generosity, submitting names to honor the pets and people closest to your hearts. Thanks to all of you, the van has become something truly special—one-of-a-kind and filled with meaning.

Even more amazing, your support raised over $13,000 for our animal transport program. That generosity helps us continue bringing animals from overwhelmed shelters in the South and Midwest, while also helping local pets travel safely to and from partner organizations. Because of you, more animals will have the chance to find loving homes here in New England.

We are deeply grateful to everyone who shared a name, a memory, and a piece of their heart with this project. Every name on the van represents compassion in action—and a promise to animals that they are not forgotten.
