A Towering Gift: Donors Help Dakin Cats

In December, Dakin began an ambitious initiative to upgrade the traditional carpeted cat towers throughout the facility with Kuranda towers, which feature PVC frames and durable vinyl fabric. Unlike the typical towers covered in carpet or twined rope used for scratching, the Kuranda towers have a sleek, minimalist design. The main motivation behind the switch was to improve the ease and effectiveness of cleaning and sanitizing the towers, which serve hundreds of shelter cats annually.

When we put the word out to our community about this project, and asked for their support, we were floored by how quickly people clicked on the link to our Wish List and helped us by purchasing these wonderful towers.  In addition, they shared the link with others, and some donors were exceptionally generous, which was deeply appreciated.

Kuranda towers provide all the benefits of traditional cat towers, offering multiple levels that encourage exercise and play, reduce stress and boredom, provide spots to hide and feel secure, and offer the perfect perch to observe their surroundings or curl up on a soft fleece blanket for a nap. The blankets and drapes can be easily removed for washing, while the towers themselves stay free of fur and debris. This cleaner setup helps minimize the spread of common feline illnesses—like “kitty colds”—and creates a healthier, more comfortable environment for Dakin’s cats.

The new towers are now located in key feline spots throughout our building including colony rooms, offices, evaluation rooms and sick wards.

We are grateful to all who donated, shared our wish list, and supported this project. Thanks also to the volunteers who quickly assembled the towers when they began arriving. Our cats are loving them, resting on them, playing on them, and staying healthier as a result!
