A Brave Choice and a Second Chance

Dakin staff members Lorie (right) and Lizz groom Melon.
In May, Melon came to Dakin and his surrender was very emotional. His previous person had developed dementia and could no longer care for him. The person’s granddaughter tried her best to step in, but with long work hours and other caregiving responsibilities at home, it was just too much. She knew Melon needed more than she could give and with his best interest at heart, she made the difficult decision to surrender him so he could get the care he deserved.
Melon had matted fur and needed care right away. Veterinary Technician Lorie and other members of Dakin’s medical team quickly got to work. Before veterinary medicine, Lorie had worked as a groomer so she’s often a go-to for animals who urgently need grooming.
After a soothing bath and a much-needed haircut during his intake, Melon was quickly scooped up by Dakin foster caregiver, Jill. Being in foster care allowed Melon to gain a little weight and adjust to a big change in his life without the stress of being in the shelter. His spirits lifted and he became a happy little fellow.
Before long, Melon was placed on our website and quickly found a loving home.
Surrender is hard, and it takes a lot of courage to ask for help. We don’t focus on what’s happened in the past. We’re here because we have the skills, resources and programs created specifically to help, and that’s exactly what we do. Melon’s caretaker did the brave thing by putting his needs first, and we were glad to be here for both of them.
