Most small animal housing sold in pet stores is too small for them. Measure your housing to make sure it meets or exceeds the requirements.
A photo of your small animal housing is required prior to adoption. After completing your application, email your photo and measurements to Springfield@dakinhumane.org.
Rats are very social animals and thrive in the company of other rats. We recommend using solid bottom, powder-coated wire cages.
- 2’ x 2’ x 2’ is the minimum size for a pair of rats.
- Ferret cages make an excellent home for 2-3 rats.
Mice often live in groups and their housing must be adequate to their group's size. Their habitat should include an appropriately sized exercise wheel, places to hide and sleep, space for food and water, and enrichment activities.

- 1-2 mice: 10-gallon aquarium
- 3-6 mice: 20-gallon aquarium
It's always recommended to get the largest size you can afford.
