Executive Director

Reporting to the board of directors, the Executive Director is the primary management leader of Dakin and is responsible for providing strong leadership for the overall direction, coordination, performance, evaluation, and fiscal stewardship of Dakin as guided by the mission, policies, and authority established by the board of directors.

They must possess strong people skills and emotional intelligence, and can work up, down, across the organization to achieve goals in a way that inspires and engages others. They have experience working with a board of directions, staff and volunteers, and the capacity to develop and nurture relationships with key stakeholders both inside and outside the organization.

A visionary leader will build upon Dakin’s history as an innovator in animal welfare nationally and regionally. The organization is progressive in its practices and is focused on serving the community’s greatest needs, which includes providing wellness and veterinary services to those in need. Working with their team and a variety of stakeholders, the ED will be the chief architect responsible for determining how the organization will respond to today’s community’s needs.

We have robust volunteer, medical, and adoption departments, and a great facility. We believe in serving people without judgment. We have excellent cat behavior programs in place, and they are most of the animals that we shelter; 30% of the animals we shelter are small pets. The primary focus of this position will be dogs; we need to develop dog programming, and dog behavior skills in staff and volunteers. We are an open admission/scheduled admission organization.

Dakin is looking to hire a full-time Veterinary Assistant and Veterinary Technician to join our team and deliver our mission.  As the only non-profit, full-service animal welfare organization serving our region, we need to help a lot of people (and their animals). You can help us do it.

Veterinary Assistant

Primary responsibilities include:

  • examination, vaccination and medical testing of all incoming animals
  • administering medication to sick animals in the shelter
  • assisting our veterinarian and technicians with medical exams, record-keeping and treatments   

We are looking for applicants with prior animal handling experience in a veterinary clinic, kennel, or grooming facility.  Clear communication, attention to detail, and ability to focus with multiple priorities is necessary.

Veterinary Technician

Primary responsibilities include:

  • Evaluating animals for disease, injury or other health issues and reporting concerns to shelter veterinarian
  • Initiating treatment for sick animals based on written medical protocols
  • Providing medical support and guidance to our foster care volunteers
  • Reviewing and discussing medical records with clients and staff
  • Providing technical assistance to our shelter veterinarian including radiology, lab work and surgical assistance/anesthesia monitoring

We are looking for applicants with prior experience working as an assistant or technician in an animal shelter or veterinary clinic.  Applicants must be proficient in monitoring animals under anesthesia and be able to work independently.  Clear communication, attention to detail, and ability to focus with multiple priorities is necessary.  

This is position is a great opportunity for someone that enjoys working with cats.

Now Hiring: Full-time Pet Health Center Administrator

Ready to join a dynamic organization in a brand new department?  Looking to bring your amazing eye for detail, solid organizational skills, and strong customer service skills to Dakin?  Then read on!

Dakin is creating a brand-new department for public medical services.  We are opening a community clinic to provide services to clients in Dakin’s service area.  We are hiring for a full-time receptionist to provide external support to clients and internal support to Dakin staff.  You will be the public face of the clinic while performing record-keeping and clerical duties related to patient care and treatment.  You will be able to triage calls to determine next steps.  You will also provide miscellaneous support to the practice manager and health care team.

What we’re looking for…  The ideal candidate will be proficient in all of the department's protocols and able to answer client questions. They will be efficient and effective, able to multitask, and provide a liaison between client and veterinarian. This position requires advanced computer knowledge, strong keyboarding skills, and excellent record-keeping abilities. Candidates for this position must have the ability to follow direction with or without supervision.  You may be working with clients in challenging circumstances surrounding the care of their pets.  Compassion and discretion will be the cornerstone of our services to the public, through friendly, quality patient care.  Bilingual Spanish/English or Russian/English is a plus!
