Happiness IS a warm puppy!
by Lee Chambers

“Peanuts” cartoonist Charles M. Schulz wrote that line decades ago, and on two consecutive weekends it proved to be true during Dakin’s first-ever Puppy Pop-Up events.
On Saturday, January 13 and Sunday, January 21 groups of people hunkered down on the floor for 20 minute sessions to cuddle and play with a pack of adorable six-week old Catahoula mix puppies at Dakin’s Springfield Adoption & Education Center. People of all ages joined in the fun, and some made it a family experience by buying several tickets to accommodate everyone. Toddlers giggled in delight, watching puppies play tug with their human playmates.
The puppies, a litter of 10, are currently being fostered (along with their mom, Audrey) by Charlotte Cathro, who serves as the president of Dakin’s board of directors. Most of the puppies already had adoption holds on them by the time of the first event, and the remaining few were claimed shortly afterward. The puppies will be going into their new homes within the next week or two.
“The events were a win/win because they raised funds for our animals, and also gave these puppies some socialization with different people, which is important in their development,” said Stacey Price, Dakin’s Director of Development and Marketing. “There was incredible enthusiasm for these events, and they sold out so quickly that we’ll be looking at future Pop Up events that feature puppies or kittens. People had a great time, and the puppies were happily exhausted by the end of the sessions. We appreciate everyone’s support, and we’re happy to announce that the events generated $2,400 for Dakin’s Buddy Fund, which helps animals with extraordinary medical needs.”
Big thanks go to all participants, as well as Charlotte Cathro, and photographer Dot Barnard who took these delightful images!
