Delicious Pet Treat Recipes

This holiday season, why just bake for humans?  We’ve got recipes that will make your guinea pig giddy, your kitty content, and your dog delighted!  Your pets – and your friends’ pets – will love you for whipping up treats like these.  Just be sure to give only a few at a time so they don’t eat too much of a good thing!

Guinea Pig Oat/Apple/Carrot Balls

Ingredients:

  • ½ green apple, grated
  • 2 large carrots, grated
  • 1 ½ cups of rolled oats
  • ½ cup Timothy guinea pig pellets, crushed in a blender

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 250-300 degrees
  2. Combine all ingredients in a large bowl
  3. Add small amount of warm water if needed to blend, then squeeze out extra water
  4. Shape into grape-sized balls
  5. Place on cookie sheet with parchment paper
  6. Bake at 250-300 degrees for 30 minutes to an hour
  7. Flip after 20 minutes
  8. Cool completely before storing in refrigerator

Kitty Salmon Treats

Ingredients:

  • 10 oz canned salmon
  • 1 egg
  • 2 cups flour

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Beat the egg gently in small dish
  3. Empty the salmon (without draining it) into a blender or food processor and blend until smooth
  4. Combine all ingredients in large bowl and mix until a smooth dough forms
  5. Roll out the dough to a ¼” thickness
  6. Cut out treat shapes using cookie cutters or a knife
  7. Bake on cookie sheet lined with parchment paper for 15-20 minutes

Doggy Apple Pretzel Twists

Ingredients:

     • 3 cups almond flour
     • 1 egg
     • 1 cup plain, unsweetened applesauce

Instructions:

  • Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  • Beat the egg in small dish; set aside
  • In a large bowl, blend the almond flour and applesauce
  • Pour 1 tablespoon of the beaten egg into a bowl; set aside
  • Empty the rest of the beaten egg into the bowl with the flour and applesauce
  • Combine the ingredients until a dough forms
  • Take a small piece of dough (about the size of 2 tablespoons) and roll into a tube shape; repeat with rest of dough
  • Shape each tube into a “U”, then twist ends together and fold back to top to   form a pretzel
  • Place all pretzels on cookie sheet
  • With remaining egg, brush tops of each pretzel
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes (they should be lightly brown and firm)
  • Remove from oven and cool before serving
