Barks & Brews Coming to You Online!
by Lee Chambers
The first Barks & Brews event was on a bright summer day in July, 2016 at Fort Hill Brewery. It was National Mutt Day, and just under 200 attendees, most with their dogs, came ready to celebrate the occasion. The annual event grew to include 600 attendees who appreciated the easygoing atmosphere and the antics of literally hundreds of dogs splashing in pools and greeting new friends.
Last winter, plans were underway for Barks & Brews in June of 2020 when COVID-19 struck. The pandemic dashed any hopes of an in-person event, so Dakin’s Development & Events Coordinator Kaitlyn Holloway led the charge to create an online equivalent. Barks & Brews at Home: A Virtual Event Experience is set for Sunday, October 4 at 4pm.
“Barks & Brews always provided a strong sense of community when we were gathered at Fort Hill,” said Director of Development & Marketing Stacey Price. “Our online version of it will also let people feel connected, while sharing a special event with their pets. The public submitted funny videos of their pets for contests, which we’ll show during Barks to let participants vote for the winners. We hope people will gather around their screens with their furry best pals at their side and enjoy the entertainment, while knowing that they’re playing a vital role in supporting animals and people in need. The effects of COVID-19 have put an increasing demand on our Pet Food Aid Program and our medical clinics. Proceeds from Barks & Brews will help provide more resources to help more animals.”
Other online features will include videos of cat training, a visit to Fort Hill, trivia contests, a greeting from a surprise celebrity guest, and the announcement of the winners of Dakin’s 2020 Humane Awards. The $30 ticket also includes a Barks & Brews t-shirt, two beer tokens for Fort Hill Brewery (ages 21 and up), and a chance to win prizes.
